




Predicting – and preventing – glaucoma

Can a machine predict who will lose vision from glaucoma before a specialist can? Dr Owen Siggs would like to think so.
The Flinders University researcher was awarded a Flinders Foundation Health Seed Grant to develop a collection of thousands of retinal images, captured before and after glaucoma diagnosis.
Using these images, Dr Siggs will develop and test a model to predict who is at greatest risk of developing glaucoma, with the aim of diagnosing the eye disease sooner to intervene and prevent irreversible blindness.
Approximately 1 in 30 Australians over the age of 50 will develop glaucoma.
The sooner we can diagnose glaucoma, the sooner we can intervene and prevent irreversible blindness.
