Restoring sight. Changing lives.

Every corneal donation has the power to transform someone’s world through the gift of sight.

Based at Flinders Medical Centre, the Eye Bank of South Australia is powered by a small highly specialised team, including Opthalmologists Dr Jern Yee Chen and Dr Edward Greenrod, that is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

From donor retrieval to tissue preparation and delivery, the Eye Bank’s donor coordinators work with exceptional care and precision to provide corneal tissue for life-changing transplant surgery across South Australia and interstate.

The impact of community support

Support from individuals and community partners have recently helped fund:

  • Two new biological safety cabinets.
  • A highly specialised surgical microscope.
  • Advanced tissue preparation technology for DMEK procedures.
  • A new Moria microkeratome for DSAEK preparation.

Thanks to community support and generous donations for specialised equipment, the Eye Bank can further invest in advanced medical technology that allows the team to prepare thinner, more advanced corneal grafts helping improve patient recovery time.

"With new technology funded by supporters, we can prepare corneas in advance and provide them to surgeons ready for transplant.

This helps ensure surgeries can proceed efficiently and allows surgeons to perform more grafts to restore sight for South Australians"

— Diane Apolloni, Eye Bank Manager
