From the frontline: why Melissa chooses to give back

Every shift in the Intensive Care Unit at Flinders Medical Centre reinforces for Melissa Hall just how vital local healthcare is.

She cares for patients at their most vulnerable — many from rural and interstate communities, far from their homes and loved ones. Beyond delivering critical care, Melissa and her colleagues support patients’ emotional wellbeing, helping them stay connected to family through video calls and providing reassurance during some of life’s most uncertain moments.

“Every day I see the importance of local healthcare,” Melissa says. “Whether patients are in ICU or on the ward, we’re all working to help them get home to their families.”

Over the years, Melissa has also seen the powerful role philanthropy plays behind the scenes, witnessing firsthand that the equipment used to save a life had been provided by a generous individual or organisation.

Through the support of Flinders Foundation, the ICU has benefited from funding for medical equipment and devices, advancements in research and technology, and initiatives that support both patients and staff.

A few years ago, Foundation donors upgraded the ICU break room, giving staff a calm space to rest during demanding 12-hour shifts looking after critically-ill people, helping them return to patients focused and present, benefiting families in ways they may never see.

“The motivation to personally support the Foundation was seeing the impact they have across the hospital and in the area I work in,” she says. “The support isn’t just for patients and families — it’s for staff too, helping us provide the best care possible.”

Inspired by what she witnessed, Melissa became a regular donor five years ago.

She believes community support directly strengthens patient care, whether through funding new devices, supporting research or investing in staff wellbeing. Every contribution, she says, builds toward something bigger.

“It’s a rewarding contribution. Even a small amount contributes to the bigger picture,” Melissa says. “You never know who it may impact: yourself, a family member or a friend.”

From the frontline, Melissa sees the difference every day. And that’s exactly why she chooses to give back.
