Giving back to the place that helped him heal: Carlos’ story

Posted 2 Feb 2026
When McLaren Vale resident Carlos was referred to Flinders Medical Centre after a melanoma diagnosis, he did not yet know how deeply the experience would shape him, or how it would inspire him to give back to the place that helped him heal.

Referred from the Southern Surgical Services Clinic, Carlos arrived at Flinders Medical Centre facing uncertainty. What he found instead was exceptional care, human connection, and the opportunity to contribute to life-changing cancer research close to home in southern Adelaide.

Expert care, close to home

In early December 2024, Carlos underwent surgery at Flinders Medical Centre performed by A/Prof Nicola Dean. Exploratory surgery behind his left knee revealed the melanoma had spread to one lymph node in his groin, which was successfully treated.

Throughout his diagnosis, surgery, and recovery, Carlos felt supported every step of the way.

“The dedication of all the doctors, nurses and theatre staff really stood out. They kept me informed at every stage and did an incredible job of keeping my spirits high.”

From blood tests and biopsies to scans, Carlos’ care journey was thorough, coordinated, compassionate and professional.

The power of human connection

For Carlos, it was not only the clinical excellence that made a difference, but also the highly trained staff members.

He speaks warmly of A/Prof Dean, Dr Roy, Dr Abbi and clinical nurses Bec and Monique along with all the treatment nurses whose professionalism was matched by genuine kindness and humour.

“They were always totally professional, but with a great sense of humour that kept everything in a positive place. That human connection makes such a difference.”

This combination of world-class medical care and personal support helped Carlos and his loved ones feel reassured during a challenging time.

Giving back through research

After his surgery and subsequent treatment, Carlos chose to take part in an optional worldwide clinical research trial at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, a decision shaped by personal loss.

Just months earlier, his younger brother had passed away from metastatic oesophageal cancer in the UK.

“This felt like my opportunity to give something back to cancer research.”

Having also seen close friends face cancer in recent months, Carlos believes strongly in the power of research to change outcomes.

“If being part of this trial helps ongoing research and leads to better treatments in the future, then it is worth it. Hopefully it will help many others over the coming years.”

Why local research matters

For Carlos, having access to high-quality cancer care and research opportunities in southern Adelaide is invaluable.

“To have this level of care and research right on your doorstep is incredible.”

He reflects on friends who have had to travel interstate for extended treatment, highlighting how fortunate the local community is to have Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Foundation supporting world-leading research close to home.

A simple message to give back

When asked what he would say to others about supporting Flinders Foundation, Carlos does not hesitate.

“To borrow a famous sportswear phrase, just do it. Every donation, no matter how small, goes towards new research and development to combat this disease.”
