Every step helps restore hope for people facing head and neck cancer
While surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy saves lives, the journey doesn't end when treatment does. Many patients are left learning to live with changes to their voice, swallowing, breathing and appearance — challenges that can affect every part of daily life.
That's why Professor Ooi is taking on the City-Bay Fun Run and asking the community to join him.
"Raising funds allows us to provide additional equipment patients need to return home from hospital," he says.
"These are things that make a meaningful difference to someone's ability to live safely and independently."
For Professor Ooi, City-Bay is more than a fun run. It's an opportunity to stand alongside the patients and families he cares for.
"One of my favourite memories was completing City-Bay with one of my patients after he survived his first cancer," Professor Ooi recalls.
"He wanted to give back because he was so grateful for the care he received at Flinders Medical Centre. Sadly, he later developed a second cancer, but it's something I'll never forget.”
Community fundraising helps to ensure patients can recover and rebuild their lives. Every donation also helps drive the next generation of research discoveries.
"Research is how we improve cure rates, reduce side effects and give patients a better quality of life," Professor Ooi says.
"Support through Flinders Foundation helps researchers get new projects off the ground, generating the evidence needed to secure larger grants and clinical trials that will improve outcomes for future patients."
