Lacing up for good: Sara’s annual fundraising tradition

Dr Sara Tommasi, Medical Scientist at SALHN and Associate Researcher at Flinders University, will be lacing up her “fundraiser shoes” in this year’s City-Bay Fun Run, giving back to the cause she dedicates her career to.
Taking part in the City-Bay for Flinders Foundation has become an annual tradition for Sara and her family.
“It’s a beautiful tradition”, Sara said.
“There is so much joy in giving and donating your time to a good cause. When you look around and see all the people, for a moment, your life crosses the path of something you might never see again.
But in that moment, you’re all there, walking or running and all for the same bigger purpose.”
Being amongst a community of fundraisers is her way of showing gratitude to those who contribute to her work.
“Feeling that other people see the work you’re doing reminds you of the importance of what you’re doing keeps that spark and gives you more motivation to keep going”, said Sara.
“We give to the community and the community gives back.”

Annual tradition becomes a family affair steeped in community values
Not even the birth of her daughter a few years ago was enough to sideline Sara, taking part in the City-Bay when she was just a few months old.
Now that her daughter is a bit older, fundraising and community is a value that’s being passed down.
“We joke that she is a VECR – very early career researcher. But she is also a VECF – very early career fundraiser”, Sara jokes.
“The importance of fundraising and coming together as a community is a strong message we hope to be able to pass to our daughter.
Doing the City-Bay is a beautiful experience.”
